Samuel was on one of his routine trips from Petersberg, Va to Rocky Mount, NC trading "home brew'. When he met this Lady at a house. Being thirsty he requested water from the Lady, Ms. Battle. She gave him water. Knowing that he was a trader coming from Virginia she asked him did he have any chewing tobacco. He stated that he did not, but that he would bring some on his next trip, if she gave him that beautiful daughter of hers. Who was Patricia, "Patti", Battle. She stated that she would not protest him speaking with her, but to give her hand in marriage was not her's to give, but her daughter's.
