1850 Census - Nansemond, Virginia
  • Queenie May 2013
Benjamin Riddick, the census taker working in Nansemond County apparently was a very detail oriented person. While many of the Free People of Color living in that county did have last names, others appear not to have taken a last name. Benjamin Riddick's solution appears to have been noting a place of origin (probably the last name of their last owner).

For example, in the household of Robert Riddick (family 33), he recorded the names of two young men "Mills" age 19 and "Henry" age 17 as "Mills of Read" and "Henry of Read".

This record could potentially be helpful to those researching families in this county.
