Trying to find out who used to own my ancestor Jack Sykes.

He was born about 1834 and was living in Boykins Depot, Virginia (Boykins, Va). I would like to know who owned him and his wife Lizzie and from whom did he purchase them.

Do search church records. Identify all white churches near Boykins at the time, then see if there are minute books housed at the Library of Virginia or elsewhere. The Virginia Baptist Historical Society has an extensive collection. Look there in the membership lists and then read the minutes for clues. There may be transcriptions available in other books, but details are often left out. Read originals or copies of originals when possible.
