  • I would like to recommend a book entitled "The Free Negro in Virginia 1619-1865". The author is John Henderson Russell, born in Lee County, VA in 1884. You may read it on-line for free. Search the title and it should come up. The book is very interesting. You will find answers to many of your questions. Many freedmen names are listed as well. Good luck in your search.

Hi gpeakswade: Sorry I am just getting back to this site. The book is available from, barnes and and from the publisher, The name of the book is "From These Roots." You will know you have the right book if it has a rose on the front cover. I don't know how much info I can post on here but when you find the book, you can also check out my facebook page where you can send me an e-mail. Feel free to contact me. We may find a family connection.

  • There were many Venables who migrated to Prince Edward County, Virginia. Some of them were: Anthony (b1830) and Mahala Venable (b 1834), and Anthony's father Oney Venable (b 1800), James (b 1801-1876) and Sallie Venable, also Alexander (b 1845) and Patsey (b 1845) w/two kids in Amelia, Virginia. There are Venables to this day living in Prince Edward, and they were an established family, who owned many acres of land.
